Department of Thoracic Surgery

The surgical thoracic department of the Leningrad Regional Clinical Hospital has been operating since 2001. The first head of the department was V.A. Frolov. At present, the department is headed by Sergey A. Ratnov. 

Together with other services of the hospital, the thoracic department carries out a comprehensive examination and treatment of patients with surgical diseases of the chest organs, provides assistance to both planned and emergency patients at the modern level, including through the air ambulance. The staff of the Department of Thoracic Surgery know the main methods of diagnostics and treatment of traumatic injuries of the chest organs and their complications, acute and chronic suppurative diseases of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum, malignant and benign neoplasms of the lungs and mediastinum.

The selection of patients for hospitalization in the department is carried out at a consultative polyclinic reception in the LOCP. Transfers of patients from health care facilities of the city and region are carried out after an on-site examination or correspondence consultation and coordination of the transfer by phone with the head of the department and the hospital administration. The doctors of the department provide advice to health care facilities of the city and region around the clock.

The material and technical base of the LOCB and the availability of qualified specialists allow for a complete modern examination of a patient with surgical pathology of the chest organs and carry out complex surgical interventions on the chest organs, including high-tech medical care for the population of the city and the region using the most modern medical technologies. The level of the treatment and diagnostic process is rightfully considered one of the best in the region.

The department employs doctors and nurses who are highly qualified specialists, most of them having the highest and first qualification categories. Our specialists possess the most modern methods of examination and treatment of patients with diseases of the chest organs; possess the necessary amount of knowledge and practical skills in related disciplines - general surgery, purulent-septic surgery, traumatology, the need for which is due to a wide range of concomitant pathology in thoracic patients.

In recent years, videothoracoscopic operations on the chest organs have been mastered and successfully applied. Such operations have been made possible with the use of ultrasonic "scalpels", improved endoscopic surgical techniques and equipment to reduce blood loss during surgery. The number of minimally invasive operations in the Department of Thoracic Surgery is increasing every year. With such nosological forms as spontaneous pneumothorax, coagulated hemothorax, pleurisy, pericarditis, lymphadenopathy of the intrathoracic lymph nodes, the proportion of videothoracoscopic operations reaches 100%.

Puncture methods of treatment under the control of ultrasound and computer navigation are widely used.

• Improvement of the technique and expansion of indications for performing organ-preserving bronchoplastic operations in patients with malignant neoplasms of the lungs.

• Expansion of indications for circular resection of the trachea for malignant neoplasms, cicatricial stenosis.

• Improvement of videothoracoscopic resections in patients with malignant and benign neoplasms of the lungs.

• Expansion of indications for videothoracoscopic sanitation in patients with pleural empyema.

• Improvement of staged surgical treatment of patients with cicatricial strictures of the cervical trachea.
